... KICK ASS ...

For those of you who haven't seen the film, please do so immediately. the following review of this kick ass film will contain *SPOILERS*.

*SPOILERS BELOW*

This is one of the most satisfying films I've seen this year, for more reasons than the insane amount of epic violence. To start off, the cast was damn near perfect. Aaron Johnson (Angus, Thongs and Perfect Snogging), an almost unknown 20 year old englishman, pulls off the perfect American teen-geek, who can't understand why no one has ever tried to be a Super Hero before, so he disguises himself as Kick Ass and tries to start fighting crimes in NY city. Co-starring as his fellow 'Super Heroes' are Chloe Moretz (pictured above), Christopher Mintz-Plasse, and Nicolas Cage.

Mortez and Cage star as a father-daughter duo, an ex-cop who has trained his daughter to handle knives, guns and even to take a bullet. They go by the pseudonyms Hit Girl and Big Daddy. Mintz-Plasse portrays the uber-geeky son of the films Super Villian, Frank D'Amico (Mark Strong ) and takes on the personna of Red Mist. Red Mist is a guise to lure Kick-Ass to his father, D'Amico, who wants Kick Ass dead on the suspicion of killing his men. The truth is, Hit Girl and Big Daddy are the real culprits behind killing D'Amico's men, as Big Daddy has an old grudge against the crime lord.

Kick Ass' awkwardness with his love interest Katie (Lyndsy Fonseca) and his complete un-Super Heroness make him very easy to relate to, as a main character should be. We feel for him, to the point where we're almost biting our nails with embarrassment. Though his idea is surprisingly courageous, it is also very stupid, and he becomes an internet sensation overnight. This is what sparks the interest of Big Daddy - AKA Damon Macready, who creates this personna, and that of Hit Girl for his daughter Mindy, and decides to help Kick Ass in his pursuit of 'evil'. These characters are an absolute joy to follow through the films events.

I choose this point to state that this is not a children's film. It's barely even a teen film. This is a film based on a comic book so violent, it has an 11 year old girl splaying bad guys blood and guts over every wall possible. However, anyone who is a fan of the right balance of violence, comedy, awkwardness and sheer brilliant choreography will love this film. Along side the acting, gore and sheer unexpectedness, lie the films stunningly appropriate soundtrack, the fantastic cinematography and the great costumes, which are almost so ridiculous they're perfect. The colours bring out the 'comic'ness of the story, and compliment the darkness of the actions being carried out on the screen.

Kick Ass is definitely a film I'm going to be hanging out for weeks to buy on DVD. It will be a must add to my collection and I can't wait for the next installment.

9/10
